I discovered that Dennis Michael has also been doing a this day in history segment called Time Marches On. Dennis used to do CNN’s “Hollywood Minute” for 18 years, so you've probably heard his voice before. His segments are really well done - good production, funny and only clock in at around 1-2 min. You can check them out on his SoundCloud page here or listen on the embedded SoundCloud player below.

Latest tracks by Dennis Michael

Also, as there is no need to keep the Audio Wikinews podcasts on my SoundCloud page anymore, I went ahead and uploaded some of my other work as well as my favorite (and higest rated) This Day In History segments. You can listen to them below.

Took a break today from my new (long and ongoing) project to play / create a new song. Sometimes staying motivated is not easy but all good things take time and the Chanukah motif is fitting in a very obtuse way.

I'm having to take a few weeks off from Audio Wikinews because of my work schedule, but I managed to put together a secondary website titled HistoryStack containing the full audio and text of all the This Day In History segments. The site contains 3 new episodes (Battle of Big Hole, William Willett and Hamnet filius William Shakespeare) that I had "in the bank" so-to-speak and they contain some audio clips that I'd never be able to use on Wikinews, so they are kind of a fun departure from what I normally do.

Short_creek

While researching today's This Day In History, I produced this song based on the events of the Short Creek Raid. I'm not sure if I'm going to use it in the segment, but I liked it enough to share.

I should add that I'm not defending the Mormon fundamentalists nor the raid (or religion in general since I'm not religious), however, I do believe it's important to look at historical events from as many different perspectives as possible. Also, you have to admit even if you don't agree with the subject matter of the William Chatterton Dix hymn, it is a beautiful piece of music regardless of personal belief.

What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Wed, 21 Jul 2010 21:47:00 -0700 Okamiden http://turtlestack.posterous.com/okamiden http://turtlestack.posterous.com/okamiden

Okamiden2

On the rare occasion I have any free time at all, I enjoy a good video game.

My all time favorite game is a little title on the PS2 and Wii called Okami. Okami is similar to the modern Zelda games in that you roam around in a 3D open-world solving puzzles, battling enemies and collecting treasure. However, unlike Zelda, the main character is not human, but rather a white wolf, specifically the Japanese sun-goddess Amaterasu.

Okami draws on much of ancient Japanese Shinto folklore and tradition for its story of battling an evil presence in Nippon which has spread its corruption across the land which you, the player, must cleanse.

A key feature of the game is the celestial brush, a game element that allows you to draw on the screen with a calligraphy brush to restore the land, create bombs, slash enemies and even slow time. The brush technique fits in with the graphics of the game which use a sort of cell-shading to create a style very reminiscent of old Japanese wood carvings. In fact this art style is so unique that it may have been a reason why the game never sold well because you have to see it in motion, rather than a static screen shot, to appreciate how incredible the game looks.

However, even though the game never sold well on the PS2 or Wii, a sequel is coming out in 2011 for the DS. This is very good news for fans of the game and currently I'm playing through it again (70+ hours in so far) to get ready for the new game.

I highly recommed Okami to everyone I meet because it is a landmark game that never got the respect it is due and I hope the tens of millions of DS owners out there pick up the sequel in 2011 because it would be great if this franchise could continue.

Reddit
Reddit is by far the only message board where you can have an intelligent conversation about interesting things every single day. Yeah, it's not perfect and there are trolls and bots too, but if you've ever seen a YouTube comment or been unlucky enough to go to Digg then reddit is damn Shakespeare by comparison.

Now, please excuse me while I adjust my golden monocle, kind sir.
